the 1916 EASTER RISING

( Please note that this website contains a mixture of film. I have included some footage from the series ' Rebel Heart ' to give the website some atmosphere. If you wish to watch the various film clips then the music on this website can be turned of at the ' music box ' control at the bottom of this page )
When the charging volunteers were only 30 metres from the barricade, O' Rahilly was hit twice but managed to get across the road into a lane and out of the line of fire. As he lay dying, he scribbled a final pencilled note to his wife: " Darling Nancy, i was shot leading a rush, i got more than one bullet i think...
it was a good fight anyhow...Goodbye darling. "
" It appeared at the time of the surrender to have failed, but the valiant effort and the martyrdoms that followed it finally awoke the sleeping spirit of Ireland. "
Michael Collins.

Many years ago when i was a young child i visited the GPO ( General Post Office ) in Dublin. I remember being fascinated with the numerous bullets holes which were evident in the columns outside, and had a childs vision of the struggle which must have taken place within the stone walls., and the bitter fighting as the battle raged outside on the streets. I grew up with the songs and the stories about those historic events. This website is dedicated to the small group of Irish men and women, who, against great odds stood firm, and fought for what ' they ' believed in. That Ireland would be free from British rule and the clutches of its Empire.
" I desire now " ( Pearse wrote ) " lest i may not have an opportunity later, to pay homage to the gallantry of the Soldiers of Irish Freedom, who have during the past four days been writing with fire and steel the most glorious chapter in the later history of Ireland . . .
" For four days they have fought and toiled almost without cessation, almost without sleep, and in the intervals of fighting, they have sung songs of the freedom of Ireland. No man has complained, no man has asked ' why ! Each individual has spent himself, happy to pour out his strength for Ireland and for Freedom. If they do not win this fight, they will at least have deserved to win it. But win it they will. Though they may win it in death . . .
" If we accomplish no more than we have accomplished, i am satisfied. I am satisfied that we have saved Ireland's honour . . . of the fatal countermanding order which prevented those plans from being carried out. I shall not speak further. Both Eoin MacNeill and we have acted in the best interests of Ireland.
" For my part, as to anything i have done in this, i am not afraid to face either the judgement of God or the judgement of posterity. "

Padraig Pearse
" Think, what have i got for Ireland? Something she has wanted these past 700 years. Will anyone be satisfied at the bargain? Will anyone? I tell you this, I have signed my death warrant. "

Michael Collins
" Owing to the very critical position, all orders given to Irish Volunteers for to-morrow, Easter Sunday, are hereby recinded, and no parades, marches, or other movements of Irish Volunteers will take place. Each individual Volunteer will obey this order strictly in every particular. "
